The Cairngorms


The Cairngorms is the largest National Park in the United Kingdom. It is also the highest in parts. It has so much to offer and there is a whole host of activities to choose from either within walking distance of the village or a short drive away. There are activities to suit everyone from hiking up Lochnagar and mountain biking to browsing the shops and relaxing in one of the many cafes and bars.


Walks, trail and cycling routes, fishing, shooting, horse riding


The area offers an abundance of outdoor activities including fishing, shooting, horse riding, walking, cycling and even gliding.  For more information please visit the Tourist Information Office located in Station Square where the helpful and knowledgeable staff are sure to assist.  


Balmoral Castle


Balmoral Castle has been the Scottish home of the Royal Family since it was purchased in 1852 by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria.  Just 6 miles to the West of Ballater this historic castle is open to the public from 1 April each year offering a variety of activities.  The village of Braemar, home of the famous Highland Games, is just a further 10 miles away offering the gateway to Glenshee famous for its snow sports slopes.


Lochnagar


Lochnagar is part of the Mounth being 3,789 feet in height which qualifies it as a Munro.  It can be found about 5 miles south of the River Dee near Balmoral and since the days of Queen Victoria it has been a favoured spot of the Royal Family. Queen Victoria herself climbed to the summit in 1848.  King Charles III also made Lochnagar famous using this fabled Munroe as the inspiration for his book “The Old Man of Lochnagar”.

The famous Lochnagar Distillery is located on route to Balmoral on the south side of the River Dee and produces the Royal Lochnagar single Malt Whisky.


Loch Muick


Loch Muick is another "must" destination on your visit to Ballater. This freshwater loch lies approximately 9 miles south of Ballater at the head of Glen Muick and within the boundary of the Balmoral estate. Glas-allt Shiel, the hunting lodge originally built for Queen Victoria lies at the western end of the north shore of the loch.  There is a path leading all the way around the Loch of about 8 miles.


Muir of Dinnet


Muir of Dinnet is a national nature reserve situated around a 10 minute drive from Ballater. The reserve extends 1166 hectares from the River Dee to Culbean Hill, and delivers a wide range of habitats including dry heath, raised bog, woodland, and both Loch Kinord and Loch Davan.


Cambus O'May


Cambus O'May is a special place with lochans, bridges and winding trails to guide you through Scots Pines revealing outstanding views of Deeside, the mountains, even Lochnagar weather permitting! There are varied bird species and Capercaillie roam here too. There are 3 well signposted walking trails.
